What you're running into is that "gay" as a thing you are or aren't is a concept without a coherent definition, and relatively new, culturally speaking. For example, the Ancient Greeks and Romans didn't think of people as gay. They only thought of individual sex acts as masculine or effeminate, and only getting buttfucked was the latter. A buttfucker was manly, even when it was another man's butt.
