Asuka is a mentally unstable girl with both mommy and daddy issues. Her dad was a scientist that abandoned them and the mom was a subject of his experiments. Mom was mentally broken where she is unable to see her own daughter. Asuka one day walks in on her hanging herself. Asuka is sexually attracted to her foster father (luckily he is a healthy man who ignores her advances). She constantly bullies the main character and does everything she can to prove shes better than everyone else due to her broken ego of her mom not paying attention to her.

Rei is a clone of the main character's mother in an effort to genetically create the reincarnation of God. The writer said he made this character to be similar to japanese goddess of the sun and to the Virgin Mary. She is the 2nd successful clone (there were many failed clones, but the first successful one was killed by the director's mistress) and grew up nearly completely isolated from society in the lab that created her. The director (who is also the husband of the original Rei) raised and groomed her to be a mecha pilot and told her to manipulate his son, the main character, into also being a mecha pilot (you cannot get anymore Freudian than this). Rei is completely emotionless due to her being groomed to be a tool. It wasn't until she accepted free will that when she merged with Lilith (like from the Bible) and became God, that she killed the director, killed everyone on earth, and gave the main character free will to choose to stay on earth or go to heaven with everyone.

Mari is a new character introduced in the remake. she is written to be based off the director's wife.

The only correct choice is Mari Makinami:
- not a mentally unstable tsundere with mommy issues
- not a clone of your mom
- will not turn into God
- is not an alcoholic pedophile
- not a minor
- actually wants to help you be your best self
and it makes sense why shes the best girl. Evangelion is a reflection of Hideaki Anno's life and Shinji being his self insert. He wasnt married and in a bout of depression when making Evangelion, so he made the remake with the happier ending where Mary exists becauses shes based off his wife.

Evangelion has always been vague , and tbh the rebuilds make a great watch as a.what if extras but they dont really give off the same vibe

When i watched evangelion, i couldn't help but finish it but at the same time i didn't want to see more of it.
Im constantly in turmoil wondering if its either the best piece of media ive ever seen or the worst.

I wish she was better implemented however, how they added her into the rebuild just was kinda lazy
with how she's implemented she's more like Togore or Graggle simpson(two chacracters that dont exist but randomly are inserted into the show for a meme and everyone pretends like they have always been there)
Me personally I watched The rebuilds Dirrectly After EOE and was confused as fuck when mari showed up
