So listen up, how does adding live chat to a website sound? I remember a niche website had a live chat in the bottom right corner, and everyone on the site could type in that chat globally. (Is this even possible?)

I like the idea but I dont think its feasible because it would be too easy to spam
and requiring registration wouldnt really make a difference since it takes all of 5 minutes to make an account these days instead of the 2-3 days it used to back when the admins did the approval process manually

It's being addressed. You can just give moderating rights to some chat members, they can only delete messages and kick participants out of the chat.
And then there will not be much spam.
But this is all theory
