That's not strictly true. There are references to the Chinese using paper to wipe dating back to the 6th century. Further records show that mass production of toilet paper took place in what is now the Zhejiang province during the Yuan Dynasty (Circa 1271-1368). Of course, the rest of the world would not readily enjoy such a commodity until the mid-1800's at the earliest, courtesy of Joseph Gayetty.
