there's a term for the alleged ships you're talking about. they're called relationships of convenience. the characters were just classmates and moved on with their lives.

valves dont work like that,
there is supposed to be a square axle going through the square hole with a bolt to hold it on
and taking it off shouldnt provide a path for water to flow, unless of course that valve is broken, in which case it needs replacing
also, that is a dogshit plumbing job
even if you close the valve it'll get back pressure from the pipe to the right of it
you cant replace that washing machine without draining half the system first
